Summary: The Mello Signature Massage is the main
muscle-focused option for surfers in Canggu, with pressure adjusted
around the shoulders, lats and upper back. Pair it with a Scalp Massage
or Sodashi Scalp Mask add-on for a longer session. If you prefer very
light pressure and feel temporarily puffy or heavy, compare the
Lymphatic Drainage Massage. We are on the Batu Bolong strip, a short
ride from the beach. Prices start at IDR 650K and all treatments are
bookable online.

Batu Bolong and Echo Beach do not go easy on a body. Even a two-hour
morning session leaves most surfers carrying real tension through the
shoulders, neck and lower back by mid-afternoon. That tightness is not
just from wipeouts. The paddling does most of it, and if you have been
riding waves for a few days in a row, it compounds fast.

Most recovery content for surfers focuses on stretching and
hydration. Both matter. What they don’t mention often enough is that a
well-matched massage clears the backlog your body is carrying in ways
that a foam roller and a coconut water cannot. The question is which
treatment fits your body after which kind of day in the water.

We put together this guide for the surfers who come in off the beach
and want to know what to book without overthinking it.

What surfing actually
does to your body

Surfing is mostly a paddling sport. The waves themselves are brief.
The rest of the session is your shoulders, lats and triceps pulling your
body through water over and over, with your neck craned up to read the
horizon. By the end of a session, the upper back and posterior shoulder
muscles have been under load for longer than most people realise.

Then there are the pop-ups. Standing from prone activates the lower
back, glutes and calves hard. If you are still working on your timing or
rode a bigger board than usual, those muscles remember it.

The specific things most surfers are dealing with after a Batu Bolong
or Echo Beach session:

  • Shoulder and lat tightness from paddling load
  • Deep neck and upper-back tension from holding head position in the
    water
  • Low-back and glute fatigue from pop-ups and stance
  • Calf and foot tightness from repeated board contact
  • Puffiness or heaviness in the legs from hours in the water
  • Dry, salt-stripped scalp and skin

A good recovery massage after surfing in Canggu addresses most of
this list in a single session. The right one depends on which version of
tired you are.

The Mello
treatments that work for post-surf recovery

Our body
treatment menu
has three core massage options and a set of add-ons.
Here is how each one maps to what a surfer’s body usually needs.

Mello Signature Massage

60 min IDR 650K / 90 min IDR 980K

This is the recovery massage most surfers end up booking. It draws on
deep tissue, trigger point therapy and myofascial release, with
intentional pressure and pace adjusted as your therapist works through
each area. For paddling soreness, the 90-minute version gives your
therapist enough room to work the shoulders, lats, neck and upper back
without skimming the lower body. The 60-minute is solid for shorter
sessions or when the tension is concentrated rather than spread across
everything.

Body Massage with Gua Sha

60 min IDR 850K / 90 min IDR 1,180K

A full-body massage followed by slow, deliberate copper gua sha
strokes across the back, legs and shoulders. Gua sha works the
connective tissue differently to hands alone, making it a good choice
for the deep shoulder tightness or that specific knot between the
shoulder blade and spine that surfers tend to accumulate. It also
supports circulation and helps the body move fluid out of congested
areas, so if your back and legs feel heavy after a long day in the
water, this treatment covers both the muscular and circulatory
layer.

Lymphatic Drainage Massage

60 min IDR 850K

A lighter-pressure wellness treatment using rhythmic hand techniques
intended to support fluid movement. Choose it when you prefer gentler
pressure than the Signature or Gua Sha and feel temporarily puffy or
heavy. Individual results vary, and it should not be used to assess or
treat persistent, painful or otherwise concerning swelling.

Scalp add-ons

Scalp Massage (20 min, IDR 200K) / Sodashi Scalp Mask
Leave-In (20 min, IDR 240K)

Salt and sun dry the scalp out faster than most surfers notice until
a few days in. The Scalp Massage releases built-up tension and improves
circulation through the scalp. It also works as a quiet nervous system
reset after a hard morning in the water. The Sodashi Scalp Mask pairs
the massage with a leave-in nourishing treatment for hair that has been
getting crispy after sessions. Both are bookable as add-ons to any body
treatment.

All prices are subject to a 6% service charge and 15% government
tax.

Worth pairing: a
facial for sun-stressed skin

Hydration Reset Facial (75 min, IDR 1,350K)

Sun exposure in the Canggu water is serious, even with sunscreen. For
surfers staying more than a few days, this facial works on moisture
recovery and calming sun-stressed skin. It sits on the face treatment
menu
and pairs naturally with a body massage on the same visit.

Where we are and when to come
in

Mello Spa Canggu is on Level 1 of The Arc House on Jl. Pantai Batu
Bolong No.21b. That puts us on the main Batu Bolong strip, a short
scooter or rideshare from both breaks, so plenty of surfers fold a
session into the way back to their accommodation.

Mid-afternoon is the natural window. Most surfers who have been out
from early morning are done in the water by 12 or 1pm. That gives your
body time to cool down and rehydrate before coming in. We are open daily
from 10:00 to 18:00.

If you are still carrying sunscreen residue when you arrive, let us
know. A clean rinse beforehand makes the massage more effective.

Post-treatment aftercare

  • Drink according to your normal needs and how long you spent in the
    sun and water.
  • Let comfort guide your next activity. If you feel sore, dizzy or
unwell, rest and seek appropriate medical advice rather than relying on
    massage aftercare.
  • Use a comfortable shower temperature, especially if your skin feels
    sensitive.
  • Reapply sunscreen before going back outside.

Frequently asked questions

What is the
best massage after surfing in Canggu?

The Mello Signature Massage is the most versatile option. It uses
deep tissue, trigger point and myofascial release techniques adjusted to
your body on the day, making it well suited to the shoulder, lat and
upper-back tension that paddling creates. For heavier sessions or days
where your back and shoulders feel seized rather than just tired, the
Body Massage with Gua Sha (from IDR 850K) adds connective tissue work
that goes a layer deeper than hands alone.

How soon after
surfing should I get a massage?

Give yourself at least an hour after your session to cool down and
rehydrate before coming in. That window also gives your body time to
settle after a particularly hard session. Mid-afternoon works well for
most surfers who have been in the water from early morning.

Does Mello Spa
Canggu offer sports massage?

Our Mello Signature Massage covers the same territory as a sports
massage, drawing on deep tissue, trigger point and myofascial release.
We do not use the label “sports massage” on the menu, but the
Signature’s adaptable pressure and technique approach is exactly what
most athletes and surfers are looking for when they search for a sports
massage in Canggu.

Is lymphatic
drainage massage good for surfers?

It can suit surfers who prefer very light pressure and feel
temporarily puffy or heavy. Lymphatic Drainage Massage uses light,
rhythmic techniques intended to support fluid movement, but individual
results vary. It is gentler than the Signature or Gua Sha options and is
not a treatment for an injury or persistent swelling.

Can I add a scalp
treatment to my massage?

Yes. The Scalp Massage (20 min, IDR 200K) can be added to any body
treatment and is a good choice after saltwater exposure. If your hair
has been drying out after repeated sessions, the Sodashi Scalp Mask
Leave-In (20 min, IDR 240K) includes the massage plus a nourishing
Sodashi mask applied after. Both are bookable as add-ons through the
online booking system.

How far is Mello
Spa from Batu Bolong beach?

We are on Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong No.21b, on Level 1 of The Arc House,
on the main Batu Bolong strip. It is a short scooter or rideshare from
both Batu Bolong and Echo Beach, an easy stop to fold into the way back
from a session.

Surfers come into Mello with a fairly specific job for us: undo what
the paddle did. The Signature, Gua Sha and Lymphatic Drainage are built
to handle that brief, with therapists trained to work shoulders, lats
and lower back without flattening the rest of the session. Open daily
from 10:00 to 18:00.
